Herkimer-like diamonds are a special variety of double-terminated clear quartz. The surrounding sedimentary rock formed in the Cambrian period, and as this rock was buried and temperatures worldwide began to rise, quartz formed slowly within pockets in the rock over millions of years, resulting in crystals with stunning clarity and few if any inclusions. While the most famous specimens are found in upstate New York, these crystals can be found all over the world.
