Selenite, sometimes also called satin spar, is a variety of gypsum that tends to grow either in long fibrous or flat plate-like crystals, which can result in opaque or translucent pieces. An extremely soft mineral, selenite often contains slight inclusions of other minerals or internal cleavage where different crystal shapes meet. Desert rose selenite, sometimes also called sand rose selenite, forms in dry sandy areas that allow for the crystals to grow in flat interlocked plates.
Please note: Selenite is a brittle mineral and will naturally degrade over time and with exposure to heat or moisture. Selenite can also naturally contain inclusions of other minerals, leading to red, brown, or even blue coloring in places and natural internal cleaving. These inclusions and cleavages do not affect selenite structurally and are purely cosmetic.Handmade items vary in size, shape, and color when selected randomly (the highest quality items are chosen first).
