Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony that derives its color from large amounts of iron oxide, and has been used in jewelry and ornamental work as far back as Ancient Egypt and Mycenaean Greece. Carnelian with clear banding patterns formed along with agate deposits, and is more properly known as carnelian agate.
