Similar to other types of agate, Volcanic Agate is primarily composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). It forms in the cavities and vesicles of volcanic rocks. These cavities are created by gas bubbles in molten lava. Silica-rich solutions permeate the rock and fill these cavities as the lava cools and solidifies. Over time, the silica precipitates out of the solution, forming concentric layers of chalcedony and sometimes crystalline quartz. It can exhibit various colors and patterns, often displaying banding, swirls, and inclusions. Depending on the specific mineral impurities present, colors can range from white, gray, and black to red, yellow, and brown. Some volcanic agates are UV reactive, with the presence of trace amounts of minerals such as calcite, willemite, or certain rare-earth elements that naturally fluoresce under UV light. These minerals can emit visible light when exposed to UV radiation, creating a glowing effect.
