Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral with the chemical formula Al₂SiO₅. Kyanite typically forms under high-pressure and low-temperature conditions, which is typical of the regional metamorphism of sedimentary rocks. It is often found in schists and gneisses formed during the metamorphism of clay-rich sediments. One of the most distinctive features of kyanite is its variable hardness. Kyanite has a unique anisotropy in hardness; it is relatively soft parallel to its long axis (about 4.5 on the Mohs scale) and significantly harder perpendicular to it (about 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale). It also exhibits a vitreous to pearly luster and is blue to light green, though the most prized specimens are those with a deep, sapphire-like blue. Major kyanite deposits are found in the United States (especially in Virginia and North Carolina), Brazil, Nepal, Russia, and Switzerland, among other places. The name "kyanite" is derived from the Greek word "kyanos," meaning deep blue, alluding to its typical color.
