Optical Calcite, also known as Iceland Spar, is a transparent variety of calcite (CaCO₃) known for its exceptional optical clarity and unique light-bending properties. It has been historically significant and is prized for its ability to demonstrate double refraction or birefringence, where objects viewed through the crystal appear doubled. It crystallizes in the trigonal system, often forming rhombohedral or cleavage fragments that are naturally clear and transparent.
Optical Calcite can polarize light. Some believe Viking sailors used Iceland Spar as a "sunstone" to locate the sun's position in cloudy skies, a technique based on light polarization.
