Amethyst is a violet gemstone that occurs when quartz containing significant iron impurities and other trace elements undergoes natural geological irradiation over long periods of time, altering the color. Variations in color occur based on the amount of iron and the specific trace elements present in the original quartz.

Heat-treated or enhanced citrine is created by superheating amethyst or smoky quartz. These crystals take on a light yellow to dark brown hue depending on the amount of heat used and the duration this heat is applied. As amethyst and smoky quartz are much more abundant and easier to mine than natural citrine, this makes enhanced citrine a more sustainable and affordable alternative for collectors.
