Tiger's eye forms when quartz and limonite, a kind of iron ore, grow together in interwoven bands under extreme pressure. The special sheen that makes it a popular choice in jewelry is called chatoyance, which, unlike other kinds of flash, shows as distinct and defined bands rather than an overall shine. Blue tiger's eye is also known as hawk's eye. The blue color comes from the remaining crocidolite fibers and iron content.
