Black opal is a variety of precious opal, a hydrated form of silica with a naturally dark body color. It forms when silica-rich water deposits microscopic silica spheres within cracks and cavities in rock, gradually solidifying into opal. The dark background can result from inclusions and impurities within the silica and may range from dark gray to nearly black. When the silica spheres are arranged regularly, they can diffract light to produce flashes of spectral color known as play-of-color.
