Purple Labradorite is a variety of labradorite, a type of feldspar, known for its remarkable play of color or labradorescence. While traditional labradorite often displays blues, greens, and sometimes yellows or oranges, purple labradorite features shades of purple ranging from lilac to deep violet in its labradorescence.
This iridescent effect occurs due to the diffraction of light within the layered structure of the mineral. When light enters the stone, it bounces between layers, breaking up and reflecting in a spectrum of colors. In the case of purple labradorite, the structure of the stone is such that it emphasizes the purple end of the spectrum.
Purple labradorite is rare compared to the more commonly seen blue and green varieties.
