Moonstone is closely related to labradorite, as both stones are varieties of feldspar, an igneous rock. Whereas true rainbow moonstone exhibits a characteristic blue flash called adularescence, other varieties of moonstone take their color from different combinations of feldspars and trace minerals and can exhibit other kinds of shimmer like chatoyance.
