Stromatolites are layered sedimentary stones formed by photosynthetic bacteria. These bacteria form mineral layers by cementing local stone, sand, and gravel together over long periods of time. These structures can reach over 3 feet tall, and fossilized stromatolites are useful records of Precambrian life in paleontology.
