Mookaite, while commonly described as a jasper, is actually a mostly organic stone. Initial radiolarite deposits, which are stones made from layers of microscopic ancient marine life, incorporated silica from local sand and other ancient creatures, resulting in mookaite’s distinctive color bands. Mookaite is named for Mooka Station in Western Australia, where it was first discovered.
