Tiger's Eye is a chatoyant gemstone with a unique optical reflectance effect, resembling the eye of a tiger. This effect, known as chatoyancy, arises from the fibrous structure of the stone, typically caused by the parallel intergrowth of quartz crystals and altered amphibole fibers that have mostly turned into limonite.
The stone exhibits silky, lustrous bands of gold, yellow, and brown colors, though the color can vary to include red (resulting in what is known as "tiger's iron") or blue (known as "hawk's eye" or "falcon's eye"). The color variations are often due to the oxidation state of the iron within the stone.
