Kyanite is an aluminum-rich crystal that forms on metamorphic rock under extremely high pressure. Its distinctive blue color comes from iron and titanium, and some pieces with trace amounts of manganese can turn orange instead.

Formed when boron forms compounds with iron-sodium molecules, Schorl black tourmaline, or simply black tourmaline, derives its name from the German village of Zschorlau where it was first discovered in a nearby tin mine in the late 1300s.
