Money agate is a trade name for a variety of banded agate, a form of chalcedony composed of microscopic quartz crystals. Like other agates, it forms when silica-rich groundwater fills cavities in volcanic rock and gradually deposits layers over long periods of time. Its distinctive appearance comes from concentric circular patterns and layered banding that can resemble coins or stacked rings, giving the stone its common name. Colors typically range through shades of cream, tan, brown, gray, and white, with each specimen displaying unique natural patterns created during formation.
