Orthoceras is an extinct genus of ancient cephalopods that lived during the Paleozoic era, particularly in the Ordovician period, which occurred around 485 to 443 million years ago. The name "Orthoceras" means "straight horn," referring to the elongated, straight shell of this marine creature. Fossils of Orthoceras are commonly found in limestone. Orthoceras is one of the earliest known cephalopods and is a relative of modern-day squids, octopuses, and nautiluses. The study of Orthoceras fossils helps scientists understand the evolution of cephalopods and provides insight into the marine environments of the Paleozoic era.
