Selenite, sometimes also called satin spar, is a variety of gypsum that grows in long fibrous or flat plate-like crystals, resulting in opaque or translucent pieces. An extremely soft mineral, selenite will often contain small inclusions of other minerals or internal cleaving where different crystal shapes meet.
