Lapis lazuli is a blue metamorphic stone, composed mainly of a blue mineral in the sodalite family called lazurite with inclusions of pyrite and white calcite. Highly sought after as both a gemstone and an ultramarine pigment, lapis lazuli has been in use for at least 9000 years.
