Colombian amber, or copal, is a fossilized tree resin in Colombia, South America. Unlike Baltic amber, which is tens of millions of years old, Colombian amber typically ranges from a few million to around 10 million years old. Colombian amber tends to be relatively soft compared to older ambers, which is why it is sometimes classified as copal, a younger form of amber. It is known for its remarkable clarity and range of colors, including shades of yellow, orange, red, brown, and green. Some pieces may also exhibit fluorescence under UV light. The clarity of Colombian amber often allows for the preservation of inclusions, such as insects, plants, and other tiny organisms, which can be seen clearly within the amber. Like all amber, Colombian amber is composed of fossilized tree resin. Its chemical composition includes complex organic compounds, primarily terpenes, and resin acids, which have polymerized over time, giving the amber its solid form.
