Orthoceras fossils are formed through the gradual replacement of the original organic material by minerals, such as calcite or silica, during the fossilization process, preserving the shell-like structures of ancient cephalopods.

Ammonites were spiral-shelled animals that lived hundreds of millions of years ago, and are most closely related to modern-day octopi and cuttlefish than mollusks. The fossils for these species are so widespread that paleontologists and geologists use them as index fossils to determine when rock layers formed.
