Malachite is an intense green copper carbonate mineral typically found in copper-rich limestone deposits along with its cousin mineral azurite. Although it was historically used in green paint pigments, it is much more commonly used for decorative pieces and jewelry. Azurite is one of two common copper minerals, with the other being malachite. As azurite can be unstable when exposed to open air, it sometimes gets partially replaced by malachite when the stone undergoes weathering for long periods of time.
