Atlantisite is a composite stone that combines serpentine, a green magnesium silicate mineral, with stichtite, a purple to pink chromium-bearing mineral. The green and purple colors of these two minerals contrast beautifully. Atlantisite forms in serpentinite rocks, where the mineral serpentine is predominant, and stichtite occurs as a secondary mineral. Stichtite forms when serpentinite is altered in the presence of chromium and magnesium-rich fluids. The result is a fascinating combination of green serpentine with striking purple or pink patches of stichtite. Atlantisite is primarily found in Tasmania, Australia, where both serpentine and stichtite occur naturally together. This region is known for producing high-quality Atlantisite specimens. Smaller occurrences of similar stones may be found in other parts of the world, but Tasmania is the most significant source.
