Amber, formed from fossilized tree sap, has been used in jewelry and ornamental carving since Neolithic times all over the world. Amber may occasionally contain plant or animal matter that was caught in the sap before it hardened into resin and fossilized, and black amber in particular also contains additional organic material and iron and manganese oxides.
