Like all agates, Petal Agate is a form of chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz (SiO₂). The intricate patterns are created by the deposition of different minerals in layers. Agate forms in the cavities of volcanic rocks or ancient lavas, where silica-rich water percolates through the rock. Over time, the silica precipitates out of the water and fills the cavities, forming layers of chalcedony. The petal-like patterns in Petal Agate result from the unique way these layers are deposited. Petal Agate has a hardness of about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.
