Soapstone, also known as steatite, is a soft metamorphic rock composed of layers of talc and schist that fused when exposed to high heat and pressure. While industrial soapstone will only contain about 30% talc, soapstone graded for carving can contain up to 80% talc with very little schist. Soapstone has been used for statuary, ornamental carving, and cookware all over the world for thousands of years.
